大家還記不記得影片開頭提到的 paraskavedekatriaphobia 這個字呢？它其實是從希臘文變化而來的喔！可以拆成三部分：paraskavei 是「星期五」，dekatreis 是「十三」，-phobia 則是「恐懼症」。其中，-phobia 後來也成為現代英文會用到的字根，像我們常說的懼高症、幽閉恐懼症...等，英文都會用到 -phobia。今天就跟著希平方一起認識一下這個字根以及生活中常聽到的恐懼症吧！
首先，「恐懼症」的英文是 -phobia，源自希臘 / 拉丁字根 -phobia，意思是 panic fear of（引起恐慌的恐懼），在現代英文的解釋則是：an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something（對某事物極端或沒來由的恐懼或反感）。例如：
Her fear did not disappear. Instead, it became severe over time and eventually grew into a phobia.（她的恐懼並未消失。相反地，反而隨著時間過去變得越來越嚴重，最終成了恐懼症。）
認識完這個字根，我們接著來認識一些生活中常見的恐懼症英文該怎麼說吧！
各種恐懼症
懼高症 acrophobia
其中，acro- 源自希臘字根 akro-，有「最高的、最頂點的」的意思。那如果想用簡單一點的方式表達，也可以說：fear / phobia of heights。例如：
Around five percent of the population suffers from acrophobia.（約有百分之五的人口患有懼高症。）
aerophobia 飛行恐懼症
其中，aero- 源自希臘字根 aero-，指「空氣」。簡單一點可以說：phobia / fear of flying、flying phobia、flight phobia...。例如：
Just because you don’t have aerophobia doesn’t mean it does not exist.（只因為你沒有飛行恐懼症不代表它不存在。）
claustrophobia 幽閉恐懼症
其中，claustro- 源自拉丁文 claustrum，指「封閉的地方」。簡單一點也可以說 phobia / fear of enclosed spaces。例如：
Gary had a bad attack of claustrophobia when trapped in the elevator.（Gary 受困電梯時出現了嚴重的幽閉恐懼症症狀。）
trypophobia 密集恐懼症
其中，trypo- 源自拉丁字根 trypa-，意思是「洞」，但密集恐懼症患者恐懼的事物不僅限於「洞」喔，我們可以將它理解成 an aversion or fear of clusters of small holes, bumps, or patterns（對密集的小洞、凸塊、圖案產生的厭惡或恐懼）。例如：
I realized I had trypophobia when I saw an image of a lotus seed pod.（我看到蓮花種子的圖片時察覺到我有密集恐懼症。）
mysophobia 污穢恐懼症（潔癖）
其中，myso- 源自希臘文 mysos，是「不潔」的意思。另外也可以說 germophobia 或 phobia / fear of germs，當中的 germ 是「細菌」的意思。例如：
People with mysophobia may feel compelled to wash their hands constantly.（有潔癖的人可能會有必須要一直去洗手的強迫感。）
homophobia 恐同症
其中，homo- 指 homosexual（同性戀）。例如：
Nowadays, many young people are taking an active role in fighting the deep-rooted homophobia in society. （今日，許多年輕人正積極地對抗社會中根深蒂固的恐同症。）
