說到島嶼，如果你曾經翻看過英文地圖或國外旅遊雜誌，可能會發現除了 island，isle、islet、peninsula 等詞也常用來指稱「島嶼」。這些字可以互用嗎？彼此之間又有什麼異同呢？來認識一下吧！
「島」的各種稱呼
◎ island 島、島嶼
四面環水、在最高潮線時仍露出水面的陸塊。不同島嶼有不同稱呼，例如：
● volcanic island 火山島
● tropical island 熱帶島
● desert island 荒島
● uninhabited island 無人島
● offshore island 近海島嶼、離岸島嶼
A: Would you like to visit the tropical island off the eastern coast?（你想去拜訪東部海岸的那座熱帶島嶼嗎？）
B: Sure! That island is home to a lot of rare birds and animals. I can’t wait to see them. （當然！那座島是許多稀有鳥類和動物的家園。我等不及要去看它們了。）
◎ isle 島、島嶼
多用於「島名」或「文學作品」。例如：
● Isle of Wight 懷特島
● Isle of Lewis 路易斯島
● the British Isles 不列顛群島
A: Any plans for spring break?（春假有什麼計畫嗎？）
B: I plan to visit the western tip of the Isle of Wight. I heard the view is stunning there.（我打算去拜訪懷特島的西端。我聽說那兒的景色令人驚嘆。）
◎ islet 小島
文學用詞，指「非常小的島嶼」。
On the far side of the islet stands an ancient lighthouse built 300 years ago.（小島遠處另一端矗立著一座三百年前建造的古老燈搭。）
◎ atoll 環狀珊瑚島
When the tide rises, seawater flows into the lagoon and submerges part of the atoll.（漲潮時，海水湧進了環礁湖、淹沒了部分環狀珊瑚島。）
◎ peninsula 半島
三面環海，一面連接陸地的陸塊。
We looked out the car window and saw a long, narrow peninsula pointing toward the east.（我們望向車窗外，看見一座向東邊指去的狹長半島。）
◎ archipelago 群島、島群、列島
一連串島嶼組成的地形。
The Hawaiian archipelago, composed of eight major volcanic islands, several atolls, and numerous islets, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.（由八個主要火山島、數個環狀珊瑚島及無數小島組成的夏威夷群島，是全世界最受歡迎的旅遊景點之一。）
